The Child Care Subsidy Program assists families in paying child care costs for children under age 13 who are not eligible to attend public school during the part of the day when public education is available, or children with special needs under age 18 who reside with the applicant. If you are eligible and are approved for services, the Subsidy Program can pay a portion of your child care costs directly to the child care provider.

To apply for subsidy childcare, please visit www.commonhelp.virginia.gov.
For additional information please visit www.childcareva.com.

The goal of Virginia WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) is to improve the health of pregnant women, infants and children (under 5 years) through better nutrition and access to health care. The Program provides nutrition education, breastfeeding promotion and support, supplemental nutritious foods, counseling at WIC clinics, and screening and referrals to other health, welfare, and social services. To be eligible for the WIC Program, applicants must meet categorical, residential, income, and nutrition risk requirements.

Concerned about the cost of vaccines? The Virginia Vaccines for Children Program ensures all children have access to routinely recommended free vaccines. Always call the provider first before going to the office.

Social and Emotional Development describes the range of skills that young children learn that help them relate to themselves and others. These skills include: expressing and regulating feelings, considering how others feel, and solving problems with greater independence. For more information, see Virginia’s Early Learning and Development Standards, Birth-Five Learning Guidelines (ELDS) which outline typical child development from birth to five years of age. Use this document to understand what skills are appropriate for your child and to see what s/he might develop next.

Here’s a resource that tells you ways you can help support social and emotional health at home: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1RuC0M4sxHFswwDJeH8Vf7NanGxmj75IO/view?usp=sharing

The program from the CALMER Lab at VA Tech teaches coping skills, it’s free and self-paced. RELAX stands for Regulating Emotions Like An eXpert. The RELAX Coping Program consists of 5 online learning activities that seek to help you better deal with big emotions like anger, sadness, and worry; communicate better; manage conflicts with others better; and be assertive but not aggressive in trying to solve issues.
